"Children of the Sea, Warm Smiles"—2019 Winona Bright Smiles Commonweal Project Enters Hainan

Winona, a well-known sensitive skin care brand in China, originated in Yunnan where skin problems are common and the sunlight is intense. Since its birth, the brand has been dedicated to solving skin problems for Chinese people and has carried out a series of activities to prevent photodamage to skin.

Since 2016, Winona has initiated a nationwide sun protection-themed public welfare activity called the Winona Bright Smiles Commonweal Project, which targets people in areas with strong UV radiation. It has organized free one-on-one dermatologist consultations for residents, conducted home visits, and donated its products, aiming to raise people's awareness of sun protection, advocate for scientific skincare and proper sun protection, and draw attention to skin barriers to prevent photodamage to skin.

Following the previous three sessions in Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, and Yunnan, the fourth session of the Winona Bright Smiles Commonweal Project was held from October 10 to 12, 2019 in Haikou, Hainan.

Hainan is located in a tropical region with strong UV radiation. The residents here rely on the sea for their livelihoods. As children of the sea, they are exposed to wind and sun all year round, and their skin is more or less affected by UV radiation, which damages the skin barrier and makes the skin appear dry, cracked, and rough. Some of them even suffer from skin photodamage without being aware of it.

With the theme "Children of the Sea, Warm Smiles", the public welfare activity benefited the Tanka people living by the sea, coastal workers who rely on the sea for their livelihoods, and local left-behind children, which not only echoed the theme but fitted Hainan's feature of being located in a tropical region with strong UV radiation.

The activity kicked off at 9:00 on October 10. To ensure that residents could fully understand the importance of skin barriers and prevent skin photodamage, Winona specially invited dermatologists from Hainan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital to provide free consultation for residents, answer skin-related queries, and popularize the importance of skin barriers and sun protection from a professional perspective, aiming to prevent skin photodamage at the source and help individuals plagued by skin problems effectively address their concerns and maintain healthy skin.

In addition, Winona also distributed the 2019 Limited Edition Sunscreen Gift Bags of the Winona Bright Smiles Commonweal Project worth RMB 100 million to get Hainan's residents out of UV-caused skin damage, provide multiple repairs to their skin, and raise people's awareness of sun protection.

According to dermatologists, photodamaged skin is a type of skin issue caused directly or indirectly by sunlight, especially UV light. As the layer (stratum corneum) that is exposed to the outside all day long, the skin barrier serves as the primary defense line against UV damage. Sun protection is crucial in combating UV radiation, and repairing the skin barrier is a primary measure in preventing and treating photodamage to the skin. Therefore, protecting the skin barrier and implementing proper sun protection measures are crucial steps in preventing diseases related to photodamaged skin.

To further implement the activity, Winona donated sunscreen products worth RMB 10,000 to Hainan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. Dermatologists can distribute these products to patients with photodamaged skin, helping them establish the concept of sun protection and skincare and preventing photodamage at the source.

At the blue sea, coastal workers are working hard under the scorching sun, unable to avoid the UV rays that make their skin rougher and duller day by day. On October 11, Winona, together with Li Meijiao, Director of the Dermatology Department at Hainan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, visited the beautiful county of Lingshui. They went into the real life of the Tanka people, learning about the jobs of local fishers, deep-sea aquaculturists, and workwomen weaving and mending fishing nets while listening to their everyday stories. Through the visits, it was found that the locals had poor sun protection awareness and lacked knowledge about skin issues. Li Meijiao provided one-on-one consultations for the locals, helping them understand their skin problems and offering a series of solutions. She delivered the concept of scientific skincare and proper sun protection and demonstrated the correct usage of skincare products. Winona also distributed the 2019 Limited Edition Sunscreen Gift Bags of the Winona Bright Smiles Commonweal Project to the locals to help them repair their skin barrier and resist UV damage as much as possible in their daily lives and while working.

Holding that skincare should start from the source, the team of the Winona Bright Smiles Commonweal Project also visited local left-behind children. Combining education with entertainment, they spread skincare knowledge and instilled in the children the concept of sun protection and skincare from an early age. Additionally, Winona also offered special gifts for the children, aiming to raise parents' awareness of valuing their children's skincare and spending time with their children, so as to prevent various skin issues.

On October 12, Winona launched the "Mom's Most Beautiful Smile" charity T-shirt painting competition in Haikou City. Children expressed their love for their mothers by painting on T-shirts, using their brushes to convey their deepest gratitude to their mothers who live by the sea. They left warm smiles at the seaside, which will be passed on from generation to generation.

During this activity, Winona conducted large-scale skin consultations, visited the Tanka people in Lingshui County with the dermatologist, showed care for coastal workers, visited local left-behind children, organized a charity painting competition, and distributed the 2019 Limited Edition Sunscreen Gift Bags of the Winona Bright Smiles Commonweal Project. These practical efforts conveyed Winona's attitude of doing good by "giving warm and practical care".

The 2019 Limited Edition Sunscreen Gift Bag distributed for the Winona Bright Smiles Commonweal Project, worth RMB 719, included customized sunscreen clothing, a bottle of Winona Sunblock Milk, a sunscreen knowledge notebook, and an eco-friendly canvas bag. The gentle and highly effective Winona Sunblock Milk SPF48 PA+++ works in conjunction with customized sunscreen clothing to provide multiple layers of sun protection. In addition to the regular sunscreen products, the gift bag also included products from Winona's star series such as the Sensitiveness Relieving Moisturizing Tolerance-Extreme Cream and the Anti-Sensitive Moisturizing And Smoothing Mask. These products contain the extract of the unique plateau plant Prinsepia utilis Royle, which can help repair skin barrier damage caused by prolonged sun exposure. When combined with the purslane extract, they can effectively soothe skin sensitivity and discomfort.

Winona has been engaged in such public welfare activities for four consecutive years and won the China Charity Award for three consecutive years. Therefore, for Winona, being passionate about public welfare is not just empty words or a short-lived show.

In Winona's view, being truly engaged in public welfare involves actively solving social problems and committing to long-term and consistent efforts.

In the future, Winona will continue to act as an industry leader, striving to guide the public in "establishing correct skincare awareness and developing scientific skincare habits", while consistently fulfilling corporate social responsibility. For Winona, whether it is engaging in public welfare or conducting research and development, it will be a marathon with no finish line.
